We invite you experience our writing through our blog and elsewhere, including:
- Brandon advocates for walkers and other assistive devices in his first byline for Next Avenue.
- In this video, Janice remembers and re-enacts her first experience reading her poetry live.
Projects
Individually and collaboratively, we have created several exciting works that we are eager to share, with support from the right partners for publication, production, and/or distribution. They include:
- Our co-written memoir-in-essays, about Janice’s struggle to accept her need for care after a lifetime of finding purpose in providing it for others, and rediscovering herself in a college for one taught by her caregiving son. One part call to arms to face our current caregiving crisis, and one part workbook for care partners in similar situations.
- Brandon’s solo memoir, about fumbling to accept and inhabit his new role as caregiver and its disruption of his previous plans for his life and art. Told through the lens of our culture’s gendered expectations around care, examining why it’s so difficult for us to imagine men stepping up to care for their mothers, and the violence with which some men respond to their former nurturers’ needs.
- Our collaborative screenplay about a woman grappling with Parkinson’s through dance, her initially reluctant caregiver son, and the vibrant and diverse community of characters they meet along the way. About finding joy in times of deep grief, it’s an ensemble-driven love letter to the communities we’ve discovered, created, shouldered hopes and coped with, through all our fears that are too bleakly daunting to live in alone—A rock and roll musical dance romance about learning to live with jubilance in the face of the encroaching certainty of death.
